A balanced comparison of Starlink and fiber — where each wins and how to choose.
The short version
If reliable fiber is available at your address, it's usually the better choice for consistency and symmetrical speeds. Starlink's strength is reaching places fiber can't — rural homes, remote properties and mobile use.
Where fiber wins
- Consistency — fiber is generally very stable and predictable
- Symmetrical speeds — upload speeds typically match download speeds
- Lower sensitivity to weather — fiber is unaffected by rain or snow
- Cost — where fiber is available, it's often competitively priced
Where Starlink wins
- Reach — works where fiber simply isn't available
- Speed of setup — self-install without waiting for civil works
- Mobility — Roam plans enable use across locations and vehicles
- Rural and remote homes — often the only realistic option
How to decide
Ask yourself:
- Is fiber available and reliable at my address? If yes, it's probably the better default.
- Do I need mobility (motorhome, travel)? If yes, Starlink Roam is the relevant option.
- Is my location too remote for fiber or decent mobile broadband? If yes, Starlink is compelling.

Frequently asked questions
Is Starlink better than fiber?
Not universally. Where fiber is available and reliable, it's usually more consistent. Starlink's advantage is reaching places fiber can't, and enabling mobility.
Can Starlink replace fiber for remote work?
For many remote-work tasks (video calls, uploads, browsing), Starlink can work well where fiber isn't available. For very heavy upload workloads, fiber is preferable where available.
