Starlink's speeds vary. We explain what influences performance — without quoting numbers that may be outdated.
Why we don't quote specific speeds
Starlink's performance is not a single number. It varies by location, plan, network congestion, weather, equipment and the clear view of the sky at your site. Any specific figure we wrote here could be outdated or simply not apply to you.
Instead, here's what actually determines the speed you'll experience.
Factors that affect Starlink's speed
- Clear view of the sky — obstructions reduce performance
- Network capacity in your area — more users sharing the same satellites can mean lower speeds at peak times
- Your plan — priority and mobility plans behave differently
- Weather — heavy rain or snow can temporarily reduce speeds
- Your router and devices — Wi-Fi congestion inside your home can be the bottleneck, not Starlink itself
Download vs upload vs latency
Three things matter for how the internet feels:
- Download speed — affects streaming, browsing and downloads
- Upload speed — affects video calls, uploading files and remote work
- Latency — the round-trip delay, which affects gaming, video calls and responsiveness
Satellite internet historically had high latency, but Starlink's low Earth orbit satellites bring it down considerably compared to older satellite services.
How to get the best performance
- Install the antenna with the clearest possible view of the sky
- Use the Starlink app's obstruction checker before final mounting
- Connect bandwidth-heavy devices by Ethernet where possible
- Place the router centrally, or add mesh Wi-Fi for larger homes

Frequently asked questions
Is Starlink faster than fiber?
Where fiber is available and reliable, it generally offers more consistent and often symmetrical speeds. Starlink's advantage is in locations fiber can't reach. See our Starlink vs Fiber comparison.
Does Starlink speed drop at peak times?
Performance can vary with network congestion in your area, your plan and other factors. Starlink continues to expand its network, but local capacity can still affect peak-time speeds.
