How to Install Starlink

How to install Starlink yourself: what's in the box, choosing a spot with a clear view of the sky, mounting, and setup tips.

A practical, step-by-step overview of installing Starlink — what's in the box and how to get the best view of the sky.

You don't need to be a technician to set up Starlink. The kit is designed so most people can install it themselves in an afternoon using the Starlink app.

What's typically in the box

  • The Starlink user terminal (antenna)
  • A mount (the type depends on your kit)
  • A Wi-Fi router
  • A power supply
  • The connecting cable

Step-by-step overview

  1. Find the best spot. Open the Starlink app's obstruction checker and walk around your property to find the location with the clearest view of the sky.
  2. Mount the antenna. Use the included mount or an optional accessory (roof, pole or wall mount) to position the antenna with that clear view.
  3. Route the cable. Run the cable from the antenna to where your router will live, keeping it weather-tight and protected.
  4. Connect and power up. Plug the cable into the router, connect the power supply, and let the antenna align itself.
  5. Set up Wi-Fi. Follow the app to name your network, set a password and update firmware.
  6. Check for obstructions. The app will show any obstructions it detects — adjust the position if needed.

Tips for a better install

  • Higher is usually better — roof or pole mounts avoid trees
  • Plan your cable route before drilling any holes
  • Keep the router elevated and central for better Wi-Fi
  • In exposed locations, weather-protect connectors and cable runs

Frequently asked questions

Can I install Starlink myself?

Yes. Starlink is designed for self-installation using the included hardware and the Starlink app, which includes an obstruction checker and step-by-step guidance.

Do I need a roof mount?

Not necessarily, but a roof, pole or wall mount often gives a clearer view of the sky, especially where trees or buildings surround the property.
